About Counselling Often, you don't know what you can do until you do it; what you can be until you become it; or what you can have until you have it. Begin ~ Mike Dooley The overall aim of counselling is to help you develop more satisfying and resourceful ways of living. Counselling offers a safe and a confidential space with opportunities for self-understanding, growth and change. Research has shown that the relationship between the counsellor and client is most important, and that it is a key determinant regarding counselling outcomes and creating opportunities for change. I work collaboratively with clients to build rapport and trust so that they feel safe and comfortable to express their thoughts and feelings as they work through resolving whatever brought them to counselling. As a client it is mainly your responsibility to determine what is addressed in sessions. It is my responsibility to provide a safe and confidential environment, to offer respect, empathy and understanding. It is not my role to give advice; rather, I assist you in exploring issues, different perspectives and possible options. Counselling sessions are usually one hour in duration. In the first session we complete a simple contract that will reflect the mutual agreement to commence counselling and clarify responsibilities. We will also explore what has led you to coming to counselling to help establish a context and priorities for the work we will do in sessions. I regularly review the status of the counselling relationship with you to ensure that the focus remains on what you want to address. EAP (Employer Assistance Program) funding may be available through work if your organisation has an EAP programme. |
